Mangos with Chilli

Mangos with Chili is North America’s only QTPOC traveling road show, and a Bay-Area based arts organization committed to showcasing high quality work of life-saving importance by queer and trans artists of color to audiences in the Bay Area and beyond. Founded in 2006 by Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha and Ms. Cherry Gallete, Mangos With Chili began as an annual touring cabaret of queer and trans people of color performance artists, with the goal of creating a cultural institution that would build the careers and visibility of queer and trans people of color artists, while making art that speaks out in resistance to the daily struggles around silence, isolation, homophobia and violence that QTPOC face. Mangos with Chili's Queer Borderlands 2008 tour took the performance crew from San Francisco to East Oakland to the redwoods of Humboldt county, from San Diego’s military instillations to being stopped and searched at a border patrol checkpoint 20 miles outside of Yuma, Arizona, from an indigenous youth center in Santa Fe to Denver University’s biggest auditorium. We performed to packed houses and got standing ovations at every show from audiences who were hungry for our diverse expressions of queer and trans of color life and survival stories. In addition, we’re excited about presenting our first full season of Bay Area QTPOC performance, through which we will present three productions a year, beginning with our annual fall Encuentros show on queer and trans immigrant lives and experiences, and ending with our June show for the National Queer Arts Festival. SINS INVALID
Sins Invalid will present a compilation video of their performance and work.
Sins Invalid incubates, showcases, and celebrates artists with disabilities, exploring the themes of sexuality, embodiment and the disabled body. Conceived and led by people with disabilities, it creates a space where disabled artists can develop and present cutting-edge work where normative paradigms of "normal" and "sexy" are challenged, offering instead a vision of beauty and sexuality inclusive of all individuals and communities.
Sins Invalid defines disability broadly to include physical impairments, sensory minorities, emotional disabilities, cognitive challenges, chronic/severe illness, and others whose bodies do not conform to our culture(s)’ idea of “normal” or “functional.”
Sins Invalid began in 2006 as a performance project that incubates and celebrates artists with disabilities, centralizing artists of color, queer and gender-variant artists as communities who have been historically marginalized. In 2007-2008, Sins Invalid grew to include an annual show, community-based performance workshops, political education workshops, and our growing presence online at www.sinsinvalid.org. SICKSPITS
Once upon a time a poetry collective was born. After hours of deliberation, the name "SickSpits" was given to the newborn poetry group by one of its foreparents, Adriel Luis. And then in the spring of 2005 an anouncement was made to the world that a new poetry collective was to secede the renown poetry collective iLL-Literacy on the UCD campus. Almost two years later, SickSpits is still alive and kicking. With members from all walks of life, SickSpits bring sounds that'll make your goosebumps tingle. So if you haven't heard the sounds of spit, be patient as we try to get something up...or just visit us in Davis.
SickSpits host an Open Mic show on campus every first Tuesday of the month. It is held at Griffin Lounge (in the Memorial Union Building) on the UC Davis campus at 7:30 PM. Click Here for Myspace Link
